I started my career as a high school English teacher during which I engaged my students in creative lessons but found myself connecting with them on a different level. Luckily, I was already pursuing my masters degree in school counseling. I earned my masters degree at Long Island University, Brookville and finished my post masters coursework at Montclair State University. My school counseling career began with a diverse population in a K-8 public school in the Bronx and then a K-8 public school for disadvantaged children in Bergen County. These experiences helped to shape me into the therapist I am today and provided me with tools that help me connect with all of my students.
Currently I work in one of the top middle schools in Bergen County where I have been a School Counselor for the last seventeen years. In all three districts I was able to and continue to use my genuine caring and empathy to support my students, parents and staff members. My priority has always been to ensure that anyone who I am working with feels safe and comfortable. With twenty-five years of experience as a School Counselor I have counseled youth and adults with a myriad of life’s stressors. My ultimate goal has always been to work in private practice. As a professional counselor in private practice I provide children, adolescents and adults with new coping skills to make life easier and more fulfilling.
I live in Bergen County with my teenage son. In my free time, I enjoy watching my son play sports, reading and hope to visit my daughter when she is stationed in Italy next year.
APPROACH TO THERAPY
My approach to therapy is person-centered. Using this approach, I help my clients reach their own internal source of healing, experience growth and gain knowledge needed for change. As a person-centered therapist I will focus on building a strong therapeutic relationship with my clients. I believe that providing a kind, caring, genuine and non-judgmental atmosphere can allow clients the comfort level needed to openly share feelings. I aim to fully understand my client’s thoughts and feelings and I believe that with this understanding it becomes clear what behaviors are expressed and why. When engaging in this counseling process growth can occur, and behavior changes can be made.
In addition, I focus on managing emotions, improving coping skills, and helping to make the decision making process easier. By promoting constructive self-reflection, relationships will improve and a healthier lifestyle can be achieved. Ultimately, it is my goal to help clients reduce stress and feel more peaceful and present in their lives.
